As you drive along Oku-kun Road in the suburbs of Nara, there are moments when the warmth of Japanese culture suddenly comes into view. The wooden exterior walls and large signs stretch out gracefully, with a spacious parking lot in front of it. This "Nigiri Nagajiro Oku-kun Store," which was chosen for family gatherings on weekends, greeted us with a comforting atmosphere. The exterior, bathed in the soft light of day, seemed like an entrance leading to a world of sushi. Even before entering the store, a sense of calm anticipation filled my heart.
As I stepped through the warm door, the sound of the chef wading the sushi filled the air, along with the gentle aroma of kombu and broth. The newly renovated interior exuded a warmth reminiscent of wood, while the lighting softened the colors of the ingredients, allowing them to shine brightly. At the counter, sushi was being prepared one after another, while family-friendly laughter echoed from the tables. It was a peaceful and lively atmosphere typical of a holiday day. Then, I was led to a private room in a separate section of the restaurant. The noise around me seemed to fade away, and once I took off my shoes and sat down, I felt as if I was in a quiet room of a ryokan. This was the perfect setting for a family gathering on this special day.
The "Hana Toku Fūtsuki (Sho Sushi)" that I ordered is, as the name suggests, a course that captures the breath of the season on the plate. First, the crisp acidity of the pre-meal vinegar penetrates deep into the body, preparing us for the journey of eating that begins next. The three types of先付菜 offer distinct flavors: the mellow taste of acorn, the rich flavor of herring dashi, and the delicate aroma of yuzukin. Each of these ingredients represents a small world in itself, yet together they form a harmonious beginning to the dining experience, as if the curtain of a story is quietly lifted over the dining table.
This restaurant-review segment includes descriptions of two types of fish: tuna and salmon. The tuna is described as having a light, sweet taste, reminiscent of a tranquil lake surface. The salmon, on the other hand, has a strong but gentle red flesh that leaves a pleasant aftertaste. The grilled salmon fillet has a rich, smooth fat texture, while the accompanying chestnut sauce adds a soft, sweet flavor that gently complements the autumn scenery. The stew is presented in a dish with vibrant colors, featuring red bean sprouts, shiitake mushrooms, and sea scallops. The aroma of the simmering broth, along with the steam, evokes memories of family dinners.
This dish made with abalone is enhanced by the spicy miso sauce, creating a delightful meal that brings both tenderness and stimulation at the moment it touches your mouth. The fried items have a surprisingly light coating, while the umami flavors of shrimp and salmon are perfectly preserved within them.
And finally, to the sashimi. The middle-sized tuna slipped off the tongue with a soft sound, while the eel offered a fresh and sweet taste along with its dignified appearance. The shrimp had a crisp texture, while the salmon exuded a light and elegant umami flavor. The turbot melted away quietly, accompanied by its sweet sauce. With each portion of fish, the chef’s skill was evident, making one can’t help but say, "Indeed, the fish is delicious."
The smoothness of the tea bowl steamed food, the depth of the red broth, and finally, the transparency of the strawberry sorbet delivered at the end. When I took a sip of the ice coffee chosen after the meal, the lingering aftertaste of the entire course calmed me down, leaving me in a state of quiet satisfaction that soothed my mind as well.
As I left the restaurant, the daylight had become slightly softer, and my steps towards the car were naturally relaxed. The tranquility I experienced in the private room, along with the delicious taste of the fish, left a lasting impression on my mind. It was a time when I genuinely felt like I wanted to dine with someone important again in such a serene atmosphere. This place is filled with the warm stories of sushi, where the tranquility of Nara and its seasons gently blend together.
