Kyoto – Eel Restaurant. Among the many options, I decided to try “Kinshi Dondly”. Let’s go ahead then.
The lunch price is 3,000 yen, which seems to be a reasonable price.

Certainly, the yakiniku dango costs about 3,000 yen. Indeed, a top-quality dish seems appealing.
Order. Regular item: 3,000 yen; premium item: 4,500 yen; top-grade item: 6,600 yen
Kinshi Dondly’s prices also seem to be similar.
Special-grade Eel Dofu ✖️ 2. Tea bowl steamed rice, with additional liver. As a souvenir, we got Kinshi Dofu and upper-grade eel bento. The total cost was around 20,000 yen.
The price varies depending on the amount of eel served. At a moderate level, it costs 3,000 yen.

Founded in the Meiji era, “Kyogoku Kaneyo” is a renowned specialty restaurant specializing in eel dishes. The eels are prepared by skilled craftsmen who source them from Kyushu. These eels undergo a process of three years of skewing, eight years of curing, and a lifetime of roasting. The result is eels with a delicious, fluffy texture that is easy to eat. The restaurant uses a secret sauce passed down through generations, resulting in eel dishes that are rich in flavor and deeply satisfying.
Recommended menu: "Kinshi Donden" – rice topped with Edo-style grilled eel and a Kyo-style rice roll. This is the restaurant's signature dish.
History and Tradition: This traditional shop was founded during the Meiji period. Its interior has a retro atmosphere that dates back to the early Taisho era. The shop has been in operation for over a hundred years.
Handcrafted Eel: This eel is hailed as "the best in Japan." It comes from Kyushu. Skilled craftsmen prepare it by splitting it into sections, then cooking it over a white-hot griddle, using traditional Edo-style methods including baking with sauce.

Famous dish “Kinshi Donden”: A popular menu featuring eel dondon topped with a Kyoto-style udon roll. It offers a delightful combination of mabushi rice and udon. Starting from July 1, 2025, the previously suspended “Kinshi Donden (Special)” will also be added to the menu.

There is a surge in the price of eels, but compared to the prices in 2018, the prices for premium-quality eels have doubled. I spoke with the head chef at my favorite eel restaurant, and he said that, in addition to the increase in the price of oil, the cost of other ingredients has also risen, which has led to an inevitable increase in prices.
